Carnaval Yucatan Puebla style

We have been staying at the Hacienda Ticuch near Valladolid and using it as a base for exploring the central Yucatan area.  We have visited ruins, wet our toes and other parts in underground cenotes and visited colonial cities. On Carnival weekend  we discovered you don't have to have  big budgets or millions of visitors to celebrate Carnival.  The following photos were taken while visiting small villages on Carnival weekend.

Our first hint that something special was going on in the fishing village of Rio Lagartos was the sound of music and giggles.  We parked and walked up the neighborhood street to discover this group of young girls having their final practice.

After dancing their hearts out the photographer arrived to snap the official photo.

Down  the coastline a few miles in the Village of Las Coloradas this group of slightly older dancers were very happy to pose for my camera.

In the slightly larger village of  Temozon these rowdy young dancers were returning to town after probably dancing in the big parade in Valladolid.  They all broke into cheers when they saw my camera.

Temozon pulled out all the stops for Carnval with  rides, a live band and

FOOD
The Papaya was definitely to pretty to eat........

...so we went for the fresh hot potato chips instead.

Most of the time the best memories are the ones that are not planned but those that just happen.
