ON THE WAY TO KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

THE ROAD TO KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

From Johannesburg most tourists either fly or take their rental and jump on the N12 freeway to get in or near the park by night fall.  We as usual took the slow route.

Panorama View Lodge and Caravan Park

We took the time to shop in the "burbs" for food and necessary items before driving  a short 58 miles to our first camp ground.  No pictures of the camp but it was a pleasant place to spend the night.  It is a private game farm and we were parked right on their private lake.  The pool above is at the Panorama View Lodge and was something we had been looking forward to all year. Alas the season was just a little early and spring cleaning was going on. Leaving a clean but empty pool.  So we settled for posing for a picture instead of a swim.

Pilgrims Rest, the old gold mining town

Evidently in this part of South Africa, as in Mexico every time you park you can expect some industries local to wash your car for a tip.

 Lisbon Falls

The drive on  the Panorama on the rim of Blyde River Canyon between Johannesburg and the central entrance gate of Kruger National Park is full of waterfalls and scenic views.  In South Africa they say this is the 3rd deepest canyon in the world.

 Burks Luck Pot Holes

It may be, I certaintly won't argue, but  I will say is that it is a spectuclar place.
We spent the whole day sightseeing along the Canyon rim.  Each pull over took at least a hour of our time mostly more, because besides natures beauty there was always a craft market in the parking lot.

We camped for the night down at the bottom and took a boat cruise on this river the next morning before heading off the last few miles to the Orpen Gate into Kruger.

Kruger National Park at last
This Giraffe was our welcome lady to Kruger!  The one animal I wanted to see most in the wild.  This is a really good omen.  I am sure there will be more, much more....
