The Estuaries near the beaches just north of Merida are the breeding grounds for Flamangos. We made a day trip up to Celestun to observe their winter habitat.
A short boat ride put us in the middle of glories nature. The helmsman was very careful to not get to close to the birds, because they can easily injure themselves or each other if they panic and take flight at once.
In a few weeks the birds of mating age will all travel 60 miles up coast to the Progreso nesting area, where they will built their nests in the marsh grass.
The estuary near Celestun is very shallow. Flamingos we were told do not swim, so they feed in shallow water.
